This week we explore the topic of humans eating insects. We're joined by not one but TWO entomologists who share their knowledge of insects and experiences eating them.
Isa Betancourt is a self-described bug ambassador. Our episode takes place during the rare emergence of 17-year cicadas in the United States, and her video Bug Appetite: A six-legged journey to dining on cicadas playfully explores different ways to prepare these periodically plentiful insects for dining. Isa is also the host of her own weekly livestream: The Bugscope.
Dr. Ricardo Mariño-Pérez is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan. He studies the evolution of grasshoppers, and is a member of the Grasshopper Specialist Group with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Ricardo joins us to share his knowledge of insects and experiences eating them in Mexico, where he grew up, and as a tourist in China.
